Whether you’re a tech enthusiast or just someone looking for innovative ways to give back, the concept of “tech for good” opens endless opportunities to use technology for the greater good on Good Deeds Day 2025 – April 6, 2025 – or any day.

Technology isn’t just about innovation — it’s about connection. It gives you the ability to reach people you’ve never met, solve problems you’ve never encountered, and create opportunities for those who need them most.

By using technology for good, you’re not just making an impact, you’re inspiring others to think creatively about how they, too, can contribute to a kinder and more inclusive world. Here’s how you can get started.

Spread Positivity Online
Be a digital kindness advocate. Use your social media accounts to share uplifting stories, encourage acts of kindness, or to  highlight organizations that are making a difference. You can combat cyberbullying by pledging to promote positivity by reporting harmful content and supporting those affected. Or you can join campaigns like StopBullying.gov to do your part to make technology safer for young people.

Volunteer Virtually
Volunteer virtually by using skills-based volunteering. You can offer your tech skills (e.g., graphic design, coding, or social media management) to nonprofits that need assistance.

Here are two platforms to explore:
Catchafire which connects professionals with nonprofits in need of virtual support
VolunteerMatch an organization that can find virtual volunteer opportunities that align with your skills.

Donate Tech
Repurpose old devices by donating them to programs like World Computer Exchange which provides refurbished computers to youth in developing countries or EveryoneOn, an organization that connects families with digital tools to close the digital divide.

You can also support your community by hosting  a tech drive to collect laptops, tablets, and smartphones for schools or shelters on Good Deeds Day.

Use Apps That Give Back
Download apps that turn everyday actions into charitable contributions including: Charity Miles that lets you earn money for charity by walking, running, or biking; Freerice an app that helps you improve your vocabulary while donating rice to those in need through the World Food Programme; or Be My Eyes an organization that allows you to volunteer to assist visually impaired individuals via video chat, or participate in hackathons focused on solving global challenges.

Resources for Getting Started
It's easy to use your tech skills to do good and there are resources you can use to help you get started. Learn about tech-driven social impact with resources from TechSoup or Code.org. If you have an idea for a tech-for-good project, explore funding opportunities through platforms like GlobalGiving or GoFundMe. You can also build community by participating in hackathons focused on solving global challenges.

Whether you’re sharing an encouraging tweet, donating an old laptop, or teaching someone how to navigate the internet, your efforts can have a far-reaching impact. The possibilities are endless, and the tools are already in your hands.
