This year, Good Deeds Day – the international day of doing good for others – will be celebrated on April 11, and there is still time for you to get on board and make a positive change in the world.
This annual day of altruism was the brainchild of businesswoman and philanthropist Shari Arison and was launched in 2007 in just one country. Good Deeds Day went viral and became an international movement. Every year, millions of people from 108 countries around the globe unite to volunteer to help others in their community on International Good Deeds Day.
While the challenges of the year have made large face-to-face events unsafe, there are still some great activities that you can do while social distancing.
You Can Clean-up a Park
Cleaning a neighborhood park or playground is easy. There’s plenty of room to spread out to pick up litter and make it a safer space for children to play. Bring along extra masks for people passing by to roll up their sleeves and help.
Spring Clean and Donate Unused Items
This is the perfect time to go through your home and see if there are things you don’t use. Clean your closet and box up clothing to be donated. Encourage your kids to give away toys they have outgrown or never play with.
Make care packages for health workers
Show some love to these frontline people in the fight against the coronavirus. Package some hand creams, lip balms, and other self-care essentials. You can include a gift certificate to a local coffee shop or pizzeria and really show how much you care.
Donate Blood
Blood banks are in need of donations and lockdowns and social distancing has lowered the amount of donations. The UK’s National Health Service stresses that they need people to keep donating blood and platelets and that their donation centers are open. Just make an appointment, make sure you are healthy and wait seven days after being vaccinated to donate and please follow the safety instructions including wearing a mask.
Brighten someone’s day with an Ecard
The team at Good Deeds Day have just made it easy to bring a smile to the faces of people you care about. Send a thinking of you virtual card to your kids’ teachers, your grandparents, or any other special person in your life. Browse through this lovely collection, fill out the form, and click. It’s that easy!
Pay it forward or Back
Start a chain of kindness and pay for the strangers’ coffee who is behind you on line at Starbucks or at the drive-through at McDonalds. Or buy two cups and surprise a co-worker with a gift of coffee and ask him or her to pay it forward.
Donate Baby Items to a Food Pantry
Most people think about giving canned goods to a food bank but they don’t usually bring baby items. The amount of people getting help from food banks has soared during the pandemic and many of the people collecting have children. Donating diapers, baby wipes, and baby food will go a long way to helping these families.
