Have you ever noticed how there are many different types of apples? Apples come in all kinds of different colors, sizes and types. Each is unique in its flavor and perhaps also in the nutritional benefits it can give you. So is there a specific type of apple that is better for you than the other ones? If you are at the store, is there a reason to prefer one color over another one, nutritionally?

Nutritional differences
Red, green and yellow apples are all good for you, according to the Cleveland Health Clinic. They all contain fiber and antioxidants, so just choose whichever one you enjoy the most. The health differences are small, really minimal so you don't have to worry about choosing the best one or one color over another.

At the same time, even if small, there are some differences. According to Fox News, apples with darker skin, such as red Delicious Apples, tend to be higher in antioxidants than ones with lighter skin, such as yellow apples. They also explain that green apples get their color from an antioxidant called chlorophyll, which may help protect you from cancerous tumors. And yellow apples, the lightest of them all, have carotenoids, which decrease the risk of eye disease.

Flavor and texture differences
The color of an apple doesn't really make such a big difference when it comes to nutrition. The flavor and texture of apples, however, is a different story. Those can really vary depending on the color and type of apple it is.

Red apples tend to be sweeter in taste and green ones more sour. On the other hand, green apples are usually more firm and tart, whereas red apples can be softer which is why many prefer it in their apple pies and other baking. Yellow apples seem to fall somewhere in the middle in both taste and texture, being more mild and great for eating fresh as well as in cooking and baking.

Apples are a great source of nutrients, and they should definitely be a common food item in your diet. Whether you prefer red, green or yellow, they are all great options for you. No matter which one you prefer, they can all help keep the doctor away.
