Have you heard of rucking? Rucking is becoming very popular in the fitness world. But what is it? When did it become a thing? Why is it so popular? And is it actually good for your health? Dive into the answers to these and any other questions you may have on this new and exciting  fitness trend.

What is rucking?
First of all, what is rucking? Rucking is, in short, going on a walk while carrying a weighted backpack (or rucksack) on your back, explains the National Geographic. The concept comes from army training, and has been adapted to be used by any person that is able to walk. And although this might be the first time you’ve heard of rucking, chances are you have probably already engaged in rucking without even knowing it while walking to school with a bag full of books or while commuting to work.

Rucking is super simple to do and to start doing. All you need is a backpack and some motivation. You start by adding weight to your bag, either with actual weights or heavy items you already have, and then you zip it up, put it on your back and walk! That is literally all there is to it.

Build up strength
Walking on its own is great for you and for your health, both physical and mental. What is cool about rucking, according to mindbodygreen, is that it is a great and smart way to introduce strength training into your walks and into your lifestyle. That way you get both cardio and weight training, in a safe way.

Rucking also allows for you to build up your strength and resistance one step at a time. You can periodically increase the weight you carry as well as the pace you walk. Of course, before starting or making any changes to your exercise and lifestyle, you should consult with your physician to ensure it is safe for you.

The benefits of rucking
There are many benefits to rucking, such as muscle building, improved cardiovascular health, better bone and joint health and last but not least, improved mental toughness. When you engage in physical activity such as rucking, it makes you more resilient and stronger mentally, as well as giving you all the physical benefits as well. And it seems like these are some of the reasons why the trend has become so popular.

It seems like the popularity isn’t going anywhere, as many have adopted rucking as a lifestyle. Social media is full of videos of people enjoying the activity or explaining what it is, as in this TikTok video. Rucking, it seems, is more than just a passing trend and is here to stay.

So whether you are looking for a new physical activity to start doing or are just curious about why it seems like everyone is into rucking, go ahead and give it a try. You might be surprised about how enjoyable it actually is.
