This European country leading the world in renewable energy got a head start on Earth Day in a major way.

Two months ago, Portugal garnered international attention and praise for generating enough renewable energy to power the entire country for all of March.

Their average renewable generation surpassed 103 percent, making this the most clean energy they’ve generated for the past 40 years!

While the much needed wet season boosted their hydro and wind energy efforts, the country remains committed to keeping up with green efforts no matter the weather conditions.

Their dedication to sustainability prevented nearly 1.8 million tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere, an outcome with strong ripple effects.

Portugal’s environmentally friendly milestone means that the country is one step closer to achieving their goal of eliminating greenhouse gas emissions and going carbon neutral by 2040.
