Creative and eccentric artist, writer and filmmaker Miranda July has developed an app that serves as an intimate way to connect with strangers, with a public art project feel. Somebody is her newest creation, and it works in an unexpected way: instead of calling or sending a text, the app has a stranger verbally deliver the message to whomever it was intended for – acting as a stand in of sorts. All of the official news bearers are provided with what to say, and even more importantly how to say it, complete with emotional cues and directions given to accurately relay the text.
Somebody users have photos, reviews and ratings of their messenger abilities and thanks to GPS, can be called upon to deliver a message depending on their proximity to the intended recipient.
Available for free on iPhone, users are encouraged to create hotspots by inviting people from work, school or any other social event to join the extended Somebody network.
While most apps are used to increase efficiency and in effect cut out the middle man, Somebody has the opposite intention. The app is awkward in essence, having strangers communicate personal messages, and as seen July’s quirky video, dramatically act out the emotions of the sender. What is so refreshing about Somebody is that it has the potential to make people more aware of their surroundings, never knowing when they will be approached by a good hearted stranger who just might change the course of their day.
