In life, one thing is certain: the actions of the people around us are often outside of our control. Yet, within this reality lies a profound freedom, the choice to release the need for control itself. By embracing this mindset shift, we open the door to more inner peace.
This life-changing approach is gaining momentum today. Influential voices are encouraging us to let go of what can’t be controlled in order to lead a more empowered life.
The Let Them Theory: A Powerful Approach to Inner Peace
The theory has recently gained traction on social media through two words: “Let Them,” popularized by podcast host and motivational speaker Mel Robbins, Yahoo News reported. Robbins’ Let Them theory emphasizes the importance of letting go of the urge to change others and instead focusing on what can be controlled.

The theory is the foundation of Mel Robbins’ book, The Let Them Theory: A Life-Changing Tool That Millions of People Can't Stop Talking About, which has been described on the book’s website as a “a step-by-step guide on how to stop letting other people's opinions, drama, and judgment impact your life.” It helps readers break “free from the exhausting cycle of trying to manage everything and everyone around.”
Robbins shared the powerful concept back in 2023. In a video on instagram, which captured about 1.5 million likes, she said she just heard about the theory. “If your friends are not inviting you out to brunch this weekend, let them,” Robbins shared. “So much time and energy is wasted on forcing other people to match our expectations,” she added. “Let them be themselves, because they are revealing who they are to you. Just let them. And then you get to choose what you do next.”
It is not the first time this message has been echoed. In 2022, a poem by author Cassie Phillips called “Let Them,” which expresses similar sentiments, went viral. The poem was shared as audio and became popular on TikTok.
Stoicism: The Ancient Philosophy Behind Letting Go
This empowering approach to life can be traced back to Stoicism. According to the ancient philosophy, our opinions and actions are within our control, as explained by a blog on Mind & Practice. What’s not within our control includes everything outside of our own doing, including desired outcomes. The goal is to clear unhealthy thought patterns and focus on what we can change. By embracing this mindset, we can let go of the need for control and pave the way for personal growth, leading to deeper peace and clarity.
