Zhu’s research found that CEOs with uncommon names often pursued more distinctive business strategies. “CEOs with an uncommon name tend to develop a self-conception of being different from peers, motivating them to pursue unconventional strategies,” Zhu explained to the BBC.
The increasing trend towards unique names in countries like the United States and Japan may signal a cultural shift towards greater individualism. In fact, people with unique names were viewed as better suited to creative occupations, according to Psychology Today. They discovered that Chinese film directors with distinctive names received higher ratings for their work. These findings suggest that embracing the uniqueness of names could potentially unlock creative potential.
While having an unusual name can foster creativity and a sense of uniqueness, common names also have their advantages. People with more fashionable or popular names may experience greater social acceptance and likeability in the short term, according to the BBC.
Masculine versus feminine names
The trend to give girls masculine names and boys feminine names may also affect behavior. In fact, masculine-sounding girl names may predict a child’s study preferences, according to LiveScience.
This research showed that girls with feminine names preferred humanities, while girls with more masculine names chose math and science. As for boys with more feminine sounding names, they tended to feel more self-conscious and needed more discipline, especially if there was a girl in the class with the same name.
Choosing the best name
As both common names and unique names have their advantages, perhaps finding the middle road is a solution when naming a child. Speaking to the BBC, Zhu recommends giving a child a more common name to instill acceptance, while also calling the child by a special and unique nickname.
