If you've been scrolling through social media lately, chances are you've come across posts about  people doing HYROX fitness races and training, as well as other HYROX related content. But it's not limited to social media and fitness blogs, gyms are getting into the trend as well. But what exactly is a HYROX workout? And who is it meant for?

How to do a HYROX workout
HYROX is a type of high intensity training that focuses on endurance, explains the Start Fitness website. The workout includes running and other types of exercises like weights and various stations with different movements. It’s similar to an obstacle course with yourself, as you are meant to better your own time, unrelated to what everyone else is doing or their timing. Although these exercises can be done in pairs and as a group, the competition is only with yourself.

Nick Bare shares in a podcast, that HYROX training is about strength, Although he never combined strength training with running before. Some of the circuits were challenging for him but as he trained, he got more and more into it. He recommends the way this workout measures his progress through objective data and this motivates him to continue and to do better.

If you are doing it on your own, the way to do a HYROX workout, according to Men's Health, is to do a few one kilometer runs, and in between, you do one of the following stations: Ski-erg, which includes a rowing machine, dumbbells and squats, loaded beast rows, burpees, rows, farmer’s carry, lunges and thrusters.

You will need dumbbells and other weights  for many of these exercises, including thrusters, which consists of lifting a dumbbell or weight in front of you by your shoulders, squatting and then standing straight while also lifting the weights above your head.

Other movements that require weights include the farmer’s carry, which consists of walking while holding weights for 200 steps, and the loaded beast row, which consists of holding dumbbells in your hands, dropping to all fours on the floor and taking turns lifting the right dumbbell and the left dumbbell up to your hip.

All of these exercises can be done either in a gym or on your own, if you have the necessary equipment.

Why do HYROX?
Start Fitness compares HYROX to CrossFit, which is another very popular form of exercise. The cool thing about the workout  is that because it is so varied, there is something in it for most people.

Working out with others is also a great fit for many people because competition can serve as fuel and motivation for you to keep improving.

If you have the green light from your doctor and you enjoy high intensity workouts and breaking into a sweat, you should definitely give it a try. You might surprise yourself and enjoy this intensive workout and even enter a HYROX race.
