Peanuts’ creator reveals his creative process and identification with the beloved Charlie Brown
For 50 years, the comic strip Peanuts was a mainstay in American newspapers as readers followed the adventures of Charlie Brown and company. What was so appealing about the strip is the relatability of the diverse cast of characters, from Snoopy and Peppermint Patty to Linus and Woodstock. Their distinct and somewhat flawed personalities were something that adults and children alike could appreciate; and creator Charles Schulz had a talent for combining humor, authenticity and depth into each comic.
In this clip from 1963 of the never released documentary, “A Boy Named Charlie Brown,” Schulz expounds on his similarities with his creation Charlie Brown. The viewer is treated to the real time drawing of Charlie Brown as Schulz talks about the universality of the comic character. He explains that Charlie Brown, like most people, requires a lot of reassurance and to know that he is liked by others. Schulz provides even more insight into his creative process as he explains that when he’s feeling low, he sets to drawing Charlie Brown which serves as an outlet to release his own feelings.
