Cities are not just static places that people inhabit, but rather living, breathing and interactive environments. This is one of the reasons why Bristol, located in South West England, made it a point to make their city a whole lot more fun by commissioning the Playable City Award.
This unique contest put out the creative call to artists and creators across the globe to come up with a technology based idea that would make Bristol more engaging for residents and visitors alike.
The winner is Hello Lamp Post!, a mix of game and story in which codes are found on street objects. Pedestrians can text these codes to the Playable City phone number, which then sparks a series of questions and exchanges between the street object and the player. The players’ responses are stored in a database and can be shot back as conversations and questions to other people.
This is the first edition of Playable City Award, but here’s hoping that the project will catch on to other cities, making our urban spaces more fun and entertaining.
