AFAR, a resource for world globetrotters interested in discovering the best of local cultures, spreads the love of travel via their website, AFAR Magazine and real life travel AFAR Experiences. Yet the the good folks at AFAR don’t stop there: they extend the gift of travel to people in need.
Aware of the positive effects and educational impact of travel, AFAR Foundation’s flagship program, Learning AFAR, provides the beautiful gift of travel to low income students in various cities throughout the United States. Learning Afar is not just a fun vacation package, but also an educational learning experience that combines a pre-travel curriculum, an amazing trip and a follow-up service leadership project.
Students are taught journalism skills by AFAR Magazine’s staff in order to best express themselves and document their journey. Through their partnership with Pearson’s We Give Books, the Learn AFAR participants collect books prior to the trip, and while abroad, create a local library for a community in need. The cross-cultural experience broadens young people’s vision of the world, giving them an appreciation of learning, discovery and the joy of giving. [Source: AFAR]
