Summertime is the time to go outdoors and enjoy the longer days. There’s more time to go to the beach, swim, and do recreational sports like golf or tennis. But why do ordinary sports? Why not try something different and unusual? Here are seven really cool sports to explore this summer.
Disc Golf
This game – also known as frisbee golf – combines golf and frisbee throwing, according to MIC. This extremely fun sport is gaining in popularity and depending on where you live, there may be a park near you that already has a disc golf course set up. If not, improvise your own fairway and take a new swing at golf.
Blind Soccer
Blind soccer can be played by people who are visually impaired or people who can see but are wearing eye shields. While the rules are the same, the sport is played on a smaller field than regular soccer. Brazil is recognized as a world leader in blind soccer but it is gaining in popularity in the US. This is a fun way to really test out your soccer skills.
Circle-Rules Football
This is a fun sport that is played with a giant yoga ball, according to Wired. The rules are fairly simple. Two teams attempt to score goals with the giant ball that is almost uncontrollable. It was developed by Greg Manley, a student at New York University over a decade ago.
Quidditch
Quidditch doesn’t just exist in Harry Potter books and movies. Fans created a real life quidditch – also known as quad ball – sport. And while you do not actually fly on broomsticks, brooms actually play a role in the sport. The sport began in 2005 and now there is a Quidditch World Cup every fall. So go hone up on your skills and grab that snitch.
Beach Volleyball
This combination of spending time at the beach and playing volleyball has been around for decades but it is always a favorite, suggests MIC. So the next time you go to the beach with family and friends, bring your own net and ball and get the party started. Remember to also bring sunscreen, hats and water.
Segway Polo
This geeky sport is actually polo played on segways, reported Wired. It began in the early 2000s by Silicon Valley nerds but has evolved into a real sport with its own league, rule book, and governing body. Renting a segway is much cheaper than buying.
Octopush
This cool water sport is also known as underwater hockey. It was created in the 1950s in England by Alan Blake and the Southsea Sub-Aqua Club. The sport evolved into what is essentially hockey played on the bottom of a swimming pool and not an ice rink. The players on two teams are outfitted with snorkels and fins.
