The bicycle has so many virtues – it’s economical, accessible, clean for the environment and gives your body a good work out! Whether you’re a bike enthusiast or just in the mood for some cool videos, tune in to the clips below and gear yourself up for a good time!
1. THE EVOLUTION OF THE BIKE
Did you know that Frenchman Comte Mede de Sivrac's prototype, referred to as the Celerifere or Velocifere, is widely thought of as the precursor to the modern bicycle? Don't worry if you didn't know because even the experts don't all agree on who actually invented the bike. That said, this particular story of evolution begins with Comte Mede de Sivrac's wooden horse model and goes on a journey right through to the modern racer we know today.
2. THE INVISIBLE BIKE HELMET
Seven years ago, two design students embarked on a nearly impossible task – create a functional and safe bike helmet that no one can see. After years of research and development, the innovative duo created Hövding – a collar worn around the neck that contains an airbag helmet which inflates on impact.
3. THE BIKE FOR CHANGE
Charlie Simpson was just a regular seven-year-old from London, until one day he decided to change the lives of people in need half way across the world. After being deeply moved by the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Charlie organized a sponsored bike ride with the help of his parents to raise money for those affected. His campaign was so successful that he ended up raising 42202% of his original £500 target!
4. THE MUSICAL BIKE
Composer Johnnyrandom hopes to inspire others to look at everyday objects with more curiosity, by using music as a way of changing the way people perceive their surroundings.
For his debut single, "Bespoken," the musician uses instruments made from bicycles and their components, resulting in a unique composition that breaks down traditional music barriers.
5. THE BIKE THAT MEETS IMAGINATION
When you close your eyes and let your imagination run free, what do you see? For pro street bike rider Danny MacAskill, it's a playground of colored blocks, dice and playing cards - all set up as his own giant skate rink. Sit back and let your eyes enjoy.
6. THE TIMELAPSED BIKE
The idea for this year-long project is simple: Get a bike, lock it to a post on a New York City street, then take a photo every day for a year. The 365-day timelapse sees the fully-loaded bike - bells, basket, lights and all - slowly vanish before our eyes. The calendar animation version is also worth checking out.
