Winter hiking can be beautiful and enjoyable. The views, the crisp air, and perhaps snow and rain depending on where you live.

It can also be challenging, as temperatures are cooler, sometimes below freezing, and you have to make sure to stay warm and safe. But have no fear, with the right preparation, you can safely hike during the winter months. Just remember to let people know where you are going and when you expect to return. Here are five tips to hike smart during the winter months.

Layer up!
Wearing the right clothing and bringing the right gear is crucial for hiking in the winter. The National Geographic recommends not wearing cotton made clothing, as this material sucks your body heat when wet. Instead, wear layers of wool or synthetic fibres as a base, then adding fleece and other insulated clothing on top, more wool and then finish off with a waterproof layer. Also, bring a backpack on your hike, as you might want to take some layers off if the conditions are appropriate and you work up a sweat while hiking. In addition, remember to bring gloves, hats and waterproof shoes or sneakers to protect your extremities.

Bring the right accessories
It is essential that you pack navigation tools. A phone is not always a good substitute for a GPS, compass or for knowing your surroundings. Hikers should learn how to read maps and always bring them along with a compass as a backup.

You should also always pack a first aid kit along with other important necessities in your backpack. Insulated cups with warm and cold drinks and a change of socks should also make it in the bag. Bring energy bars and other compact foods that will help you stay fueled.

Be careful with your electronic devices
Hiking in the winter sometimes means it will be raining and you will be exposed to water. Your phone, camera and other electronics could get wet and ruined, unless you make sure to pack them properly. According to The Hungry Hiker, a website for hiking aficionados, you should keep your electronics near your body, so that the cold air doesn't suck the battery out of them. In addition, make sure they are fully charged before you leave, and even bring an external battery so you can charge them on the go if needed.

Check the weather
Always check the weather forecast before going on or even planning a hiking trip. Although the day might look clear, you don't know if it is meant to start raining soon or if the forecast predicts a storm ahead. Be prepared and pack accordingly. Checking the weather forecast takes less than a minute and it will help you stay safe and warm during your hike.

Embrace the hike
Hiking during the winter can be super enjoyable and fun. You can even bring friends with you and make a whole trip out of it. It is true you might have to be more prepared with extra layers of clothing and packing some additional things you don’t necessarily need in warmer months. But it can also be magical and peaceful, and a unique experience. So stay positive and safe, and remember to enjoy the hike!
